Testing for Unit Root Against LSTAR Model: Wavelet Improvement Under GARCH Distortion

چکیده
In this paper, we propose a Nonlinear Dickey-Fuller test for unit root against first order Logistic Smooth Transition Autoregressive LSTAR (1) model with time as the transition variable. The Nonlinear Dickey-Fuller test statistic is established under the null hypothesis of random walk without drift and the alternative model is a nonlinear LSTAR (1) model. The asymptotic distribution of the test is analytically derived while the small sample distributions are investigated by Monte Carlo experiment. The size and power properties of the test have been investigated using Monte Carlo experiment. The results have shown that there is a serious size distortion for the Nonlinear Dickey-Fuller test when GARCH errors appear in the Data Generating Process (DGP), which lead to an over-rejection of the unit root null hypothesis. To solve this problem, we use the Wavelet technique to count off the GARCH distortion and to improve the size property of the test under GARCH error. We also discuss the asymptotic distributions of the test statistics in GARCH and wavelet environments. Finally, an empirical example is used to compare our test with the traditional Dickey-Fuller test. F

Finite-sample properties of asymmetric unit root tests in the presence of GARCH: The impact of alternative methods of threshold selection
The research of Kim and Schmidt (1993) is extended to examine the properties of asymmetric unit root tests in the presence of generalised autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH). Using Monte Carlo simulation, threshold autoregressive and momentum—threshold autoregressive asymmetric unit tests are shown to suffer greater size distortion than the original (implicitly symmetric) Dick...
متن کاملRe-Parameterization of Multi-regime STAR-GARCH Model
It is well known in the literature that the joint parameter estimation of the Smooth Autoregressive – Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (STAR-GARCH) models poses many numerical challenges with unknown causes. This paper aims to uncover the root of the numerical difficulties in obtaining stable parameter estimates for a class of three-regime STAR-GARCH models using Quasi-...
متن کاملWavelet Linear Density Estimation for a GARCH Model under Various Dependence Structures
We consider n observations from the GARCH-type model: S = σ2Z, where σ2 and Z are independent random variables. We develop a new wavelet linear estimator of the unknown density of σ2 under four different dependence structures: the strong mixing case, the β- mixing case, the pairwise positive quadrant case and the ρ-mixing case. Its asymptotic mean integrated squared error properties are ...
متن کاملTesting for a Unit Root in the Asymmetric Nonlinear Smooth Transition Framework
This paper proposes a simple testing procedure to detect the presence of nonlinear but global stationary logistic smooth transition autoregressive processes. This testing procedure nests the one developed by Kapetanios et al. (2003) that accommodates specifically the alternative of a global stationary ESTAR process. The present work makes a threefold contribution to the literature. First, it de...
متن کاملTesting for Weak-form Efficiency of Crude Palm Oil Spot and Futures Markets: New Evidence from a GARCH Unit Root Test with Multiple Structural Breaks
There is a sizeable literature that tests for weak-form efficiency in commodity and energy spot and futures prices. While many studies now allow for multiple structural breaks to address the criticism that conventional unit root tests have low power to reject the unit root null in the presence of structural change, the extant literature overlooks the fact that conventional unit root tests are b...
